Book Review: VOX By Christina Dalcher
September 04, 2018
VOX is an hard hitting dystopian set in the near future where woman are only permitted to speak 100 words a day, any more and volts of electricity will be sent through their body.
“Think about waking up one morning and finding you don’t have a voice in anything.”
This book felt so real and not a far fetched idea that the book felt so real.
I think Dalcher has an amazing way with words and that her book accurately predicts how people would react to the new regime, such as young boys and girls going along with the structure and ideals and I think this was shown perfectly in the book. Even though her older son was a character I hated, I also appreciated why and thats because he was behaving in a way that many others would if the situation became real.
The only qualm I have of this book is it straight blames religion as the factor on why these ideals had come around and I did find it uncomfortable. Only on the basis that it could confirm peoples negatives views on religion itself. I also thought the main character was very selfish and I felt myself rolling my eyes at her in some places, I know she hated her new life and I understand but I feel like she didn't ever really redeem herself.
I will say that this book does contain a lot of technical details and words especially in the last half of the book. While I can appreciate the science I do also understand how it can be hard to understand, bog down the book and make the ending a little anti-climatic.
