Book Review: Without Merit By Colleen Hoover

August 25, 2018

The Voss family are anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, the once cancer-striken mother lives in the basement. The father is married to the mothers former nurse, the little half-brother isn't allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there's Merit.

'Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness'

The storyline of this book is really unique in the sense that the family live very untraditionally. The mother lives in the basement scared to leave, the father has married and moved in the mistress and they live in an converted church with a massive statue of Jesus leaning over the front room.

From the get go, I loved Merit starting from her collecting trophies she hasn't earned from various second hand shops and her no shit attitude towards people. I thought all the other characters that Colleen Hoover introduced were all unique in terms of characteristics and how they progressed throughout the book.

I also loved how this book albeit it did have a love interest, it was there to guide along the main focus which to me was the family relationship. Going from completely broken to slowing getting mended by the addition of two men who come into the families lives.
