Book Review: The Only Story By Julian Barnes.

August 26, 2018

First love has lifelong consequences, but Paul doesn't know anything about that at nineteen. At nineteen, he's proud of the fact his relationship flies in the face of social convention. As he grows older, the demands placed on Paul by love become far greater than he could possibly have foreseen.

'You realise that tough love is also tough on the lover'

This was a blind pick up at the library and a book that i did enjoy but one that wasn't amazing unfortunately. Following Paul as he talks about his first love when he was nineteen and following the development throughout the years but there was something missing that didn't give me the wow factor.

It took me a while to get in the rhythm of the narrative and I found Paul to be unlikeable to pretentious in a child way to start. However after a few pages I started to get into the narrative and ended up at the end enjoying his character more then i anticipated.

From the get go, apart from some random quotes thrown in, I enjoyed the main lover, Susan. As a character she was fun at the start, annoying in the middle, and vulnerable at the end. Following her as she and Paul begin the secret affair to when her spiral into alcoholism started was eye opening to read and one which kept my emotions at a high.

However the only negative which did massively affect my reading experience of this is the middle. I got lost on what was happening and become uninterested in the characters, storyline and writing which I feel spoiled the book as a whole for me.
