Book Review: Strange Weather By Joe Hill

August 30, 2018

A collection of 4 short 'novels' which as Joe Hill himself says are 'All Killer, no filler' and while i agree to a certain extent I do think that two of the stories which are 'Loaded' and 'Aloft'. The next parts will contain spoilers.

'“It was even softer and fluffier than I’d imagined. It was like wearing an Ewok.”

Snapshot

All about a young boys encounter with a villain who can rob his victim's memories by taking polaroid photos of them.

I think this one was my favourite out of them all, I loved the main character and thought the premise of this story was interesting and fun to read as it developed.

Loaded

A mall security guard has stopped a mass shooting but as a newspaper reporter keeps digging his story quickly unravels

I did enjoy this one although as i have said at the start i did feel that this one dragged a little in the middle which made me feel uninterested in places. I did think this writing style and build up needed a good length to develop without being too jarring but for a short story i found it too long.

Aloft

A tale about a skydiver who lands on a very strange cloud in the sky

I enjoyed the start of this book and thought the premise was really unique and original. I found myself loving the first part of this story but near the middle I found myself losing a little interest and it didn't really pick back up for the end.

Rain

An ordinary day until the apocalypse happens and literal nails of crystals fall from the sky like rain.

The story of Rain was one which i thought was a terrifying concept purely as its the one apart from loaded which could happen in real life. I loved the descriptions Hill wrote about this world and the story was captivating from start to finish.

Fear thickens time, turns it slow and viscous.”

Overall, I enjoyed this collection. I think Hill has a strong voice and it hasn't been impacted when writing shorter writings. However i do feel that some of the stories were a little too long and if they had been shorter and my interest had fallen a little this would have most definatly a 5 star read.
